Main Diet

Chickens are omnivorous, meaning that they can digest both meat and plant matter. The size of the breed can change the diet in a few ways, but not many.

Plant Matter

Chickens aren't picky eaters when it comes to plants. They can digest seeds, fruits, vegetables, grains and even plant-based table scraps.

Meats

Chickens are well known for eating insects (most notably mealworms) but they can also digest other types of animals such as small lizards, small snakes and mice pups. Surprisingly they can also eat eggs.

Season specific

Seasonal changes can affect a chicken's diet. In the winter, foraging is not an option and their food intake must be higher.
