Silkie (sometimes spelled “Silky”) is a breed of chicken from China. They are notable for their feathers which are sometimes described as feeling similar to silk and satin. Silkies are also notable for their black skin which are described as an unusual attribute in European Cuisine.
Silkies are an unusual type of chicken compared to other breeds. They have 3 fingered wings, typically have Polydactyly(Extra Fingers or Toes) and as stated earlier, have black skin. Their plumage was once unique among in Silkies but is now present in various breeds such as the Chabo.They have walnut-shaped combs and small wattles. Their plumage also leaves them unable to fly due to the lack of functioning barbicels
The history of the Silkie is rather vague and it is unknown when they came about. The Earliest surviving account of Silkie Chickens comes from Marco Polo, who wrote about a “Furry Chicken” when in Asia.
Silkie Broilers (also known as Taihe) are a large variation of Silkie. Silkie Broilers are typically what are referred to when referring to Silkies as Large Breeds.
